All Hail The Bass Queen
The craziness of Gasparilla is now over. More than 900,000 revelers partied along the streets of Bayshore and 7th Ave. Tampa was left with empty bottles, broken beads, and hoards of partied out professionals calling in sick on Monday. But now that the chaos is beyond us, we can set our sights to the real essence of our nightlife. The music! With the Bass Queen herself making another visit to Tampa, dance music junkies get another taste of the Mixtress herself. On the other end of the spectrum, San Francisco house music traditions will be on display at the Hyde Park Cafe, as JT Donaldson and the Paradise Crew celebrate their second anniversary. Oh yes, it's a nocturnal delight on a turntable platter this weekend by the Bay.
Like all great clubs around the globe, The Amphitheater in Ybor City seems to keep the talent rolling in week after week. Last Saturday we had the chance to enjoy special guest Suzy Solar melt the vinyl to a trance addicted crowd. This Saturday, February 19, arguably the best female DJ in the world takes to the tables for some breaks supreme. After only four months, Bass Queen Baby Anne will make yet another appearance at The Amp. Fresh off the release of her latest mix compilation "Mixtress", Baby Anne will release a tirade of beats on a bass hungry crowd. After seeing the lines to get into Amp the last few weeks, I strongly suggest getting there early. I'm not kidding; it was like a scene straight from Mansion in Miami. Everyone was jockeying to get a place in line, dropping names, hoping the velvet rope would be opened just one more time. Ah, dare to dream.
With Baby Anne on the cards this week, you have chance to witness one of the country's most popular female DJs. Her hi-octane sets of breakbeat energy, fused with heavy doses of Miami bass has rocked many a dance floor at clubs from coast to coast. Encouraged by her good friend DJ Icey, Marianne started spinning in 1992. Icey had seen her on the dance floor "busting out great moves" and they became instant friends. He encouraged her to start spinning so she bought her first set of Technics and never looked back.
The Orlando based DJ has a number of singles to date, including "Trippin' On the Bass," "Abercrombie," and "Bass Queen," as well as "Freak's Groove" on DJ Icey's Zone Records, plus singles released on other labels including "Fury" on Moonshine and her latest "Mixtress." Her signature sounds will electrify your heart, tap your soul, and free your mind of all inhibitions. Joining Baby Anne on stage will be Amphitheater residents Kidd Leow and DJ Mondo. Make sure you visit the VIP room, tip your bartenders well and buy some shots from the creative cocktail waitresses. Of course, we've made sure to highlight them in our photo galleries. So now that you're interested, be sure to check out my exclusive Amphitheater review from Clubland, or visit them online at Amphitheaterybor.com.
Anniversary In Paradise
Sometimes the nightlife gods smile down on us, leaving a nocturnal dilemma for dance music fans. Not that this is a bad thing. Having two well-known DJs in town on the same night can not only challenge you logistically, but also put your physical fitness to a test. No, I'm not talking about running from club to club. That only happens when last call is something ridiculas and DJ sets have to start before midnight. But not the case this Saturday at The Cafe, as two of Tampa's most revered house music DJs tip the tables along side San Fran producer JT Donaldson.
Paradise, a passion dedicated to house music continues their bi-weekly party with a special two-year anniversary session. But the crew is also in the mix, celebrating owner Tommy O's birthday. Which would explain the attention to detail in bringing in another Om Records celebrity in Donaldson. Of course, the party wouldn't be complete without Paradise residents Joshua Wilkins and JASK kicking off the Velociti vibes. This is definitely an anniversary that is well deserved for Wilkins, JASK and HPC. In fact, Paradise has been regarded as one of the best mid-sized venues/nights in the U.S. by the likes of Johnny Fiasco, Mark Grant & Brian Tappert to name a few. And now JT Donaldson will feel the passion of South Tampa.
To give you some inside scoop, Donaldson has been producing since the birth of Dallas' Fairpark Records in 1997. As a co-founder and in house producer for Fairpark, JT moved to Chicago from Dallas after the label took a hiatus. After recording an album for Seasons in Los Angeles, he moved again, this time to the left coast where he was working with Lance DeSardi and Chris Penny aka CPENN. Currently he resides in Chicago where he has started his new record label with co-owner Tim Shumaker called, Gallery Music Group.
He has been able to share the music through DJing, producing, and now with his new label featuring remixers and artists like 2nd Shift, Home & Garden, Derrick Carter, Lance DeSardi, PTy LTd, Slater Hogan & John Larner, and Joshua. JT’s music has been in demand world wide and has taken him to places like South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, South Korea, Germany, Norway, France, Belgium, Turkey, The U.K. and many others.
