Chemical Spill
Remember back a few years when a new sound came out of London that had everyone giddy to hit the clubs? It was a sound that blended modern pop culture with 80's electro. It sounded like techno, but had more substance than the usual "James Brown Is Dead" tracks of those years. 11 years and 8 million albums since bursting out of the UK underground, The Chemical Brothers are back. Now I'm sure most of you are reading this and saying, "holy crap, they're coming to Tampa?" Well, not exactly. But that doesn't mean you can't get your britches ready for some block rockin beats. With a CD release, house in Hyde Park, and the Super Bowl, you have more than enough reasons to recover from last week's Gasparilla festival.
This Friday night, Feb. 4th, downstairs at The Castle in Ybor City, Rich Ranck and Jason Barco present a CD release party for The Chemical Brothers. With their fifth studio album, "Push the Button", Tim Rowlands and Ed Simons once again demonstrate that when it comes to beat-based innovation and sheer sonic excellence, there is no match. The party will feature the inspired collaboration of this UK duo, $3 block rockin' cocktails, and many giveaways.
So here is the skinny on why you should break out of the post-party funk and head by way of the Latin district. The Chemical Brothers are doing a tour, but unless you've booked a flight to Holland or Tokyo, you'll be hard pressed to find a US date anytime soon. This party will not only give you a chance to check out the new tracks, but also venture into the world of Progression, a six-year long party hosted by Ranck. Progression is in effect every Friday downstairs at The Castle and the second Saturday of every month at Czar in Ybor. Stay tuned for more details on these little gigs and how to join in the fun. I might just find ya out there and take some photos.
A Trance Addiction
Since the past few weeks have been dedicated to house music and Gasparilla, it's nice to see The Amphitheater in Ybor maintains a daily trance allowance. This past weekend, I had the wonderful opportunity to attend their highly sexy and popular Tantra party. This event runs every six to eight weeks and is basically an invitation-only party hosted by Paul Gamache, Amp marketing director. The idea is to dress in your most sultry and sexy bedroom attire and come ready to lose all your inhibitions. Those who were lucky enough to get the invite can attest to a very high representation of the latest Victoria Secret line. My only suggestion is for the guys to stick with standard matching PJs, because t-shirts and tank tops are not allowed.
But As a fellow trance addict, I was quite impressed to hear tracks from Armin van Buuren and Tiesto in the mix. Around every corner of the club, I was faced with the euphoric vibe of what is fast becoming the hottest form of EDM. And you'll be happy to know, it doesn't end with Tantra. This Saturday night, Feb. 5th, coming straight from the decks of Orlando, The Amphitheater hosts Kimball Collins.
Collins is a world-renowned Trance DJ who has received global recognition for his unique style of DJ-ing and producing. Raised in Orlando, Kimball started his career in 1987 and has since become one of the most respected and sought after Trance music DJ's in the US. Over the years people around the globe have discovered and realized the unique talent and devotion apparent in his musical style. Finding disciples packing the Amp will be no problem. Kimball is now regularly playing all over Europe including clubs such as the UK's Ministry of Sound and Renaissance. So it should come as no surprise that Collins is taking to the tables of The Amp and waking some rubbish through the sounds of vinyl.
